"Männerbund" and "pistos hetairos". Well-being of the Epic Warrior

    Get PDF
Männerbund, male solidarity between comrades in arms, has vital importance in war, at least in ancient warfare. In Homeric poetry we find clear examples of the importance of such ties, always between men, and observe a variety of possible overtones. Moreover, the bond that unites a couple as Achilles and Patroclus has an additional component, that of the friend as counsellor and confidant. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the role played by the pistos hetairos, the reliable friend, in the well-being of the warrior. The basis of this study will be the Iliad, epic in whose plot the couple Achilles-Patroclus is an excellent example of the positive function exercised by the existence of a friend, confidant and comrade absolutely faithful, as well as the dangers of that presence disappearing. Aside from the possibly erotic nature of the relationship between Achilles and Patroclus, the latter’s fundamental role is that of reliable counsellor to Achilles, the same role that Nestor plays in relation to Agamemnon, or Polydamas to Hector

Conditions Pertinent for Overcoming Gender Inequality in Political Leadership: A Comparative Analysis of Angela Merkel and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf

This qualitative study of Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany implements a most different systems design (MDSD) as the basis for its comparative analysis. A cross-examination of Johnson Sirleaf’s and Merkel’s personal backgrounds, their leadership styles in their political careers before they became the heads of their governments, and their level of political participation in democracy or liberalization movements prior to their rise to power is conducted in this study. Key strands of feminist approaches in IR, such as liberal feminism, difference feminism, and postmodern feminism add to this study’s discourse on Johnson Sirleaf’s and Merkel’s rise to political power. The basis for this study is that women comprise an underrepresented minority in the field of politics worldwide. As women in political leadership is more prevalent in times of crisis around the world, it is exceedingly important to understand the conditions under which women political leaders may attain their country’s highest political office. More so, this study identifies some key similar conditions from which Angela Merkel and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf overcame gendered obstacles in politics to reach their country’s highest political offices

Bridging the Gap: A Pentadic Analysis of Theresa May’s Conservative Conference Speech “Britain after Brexit: A Vision of a Global Britain”

This qualitative study of British Prime Minister Theresa May’s Conservative conference speech “Britain after Brexit: A Vision of a Global Britain” delivered in the fall of 2016 uses pentadic criticism as the basis for its analysis. This contemporary study identifies women as an underrepresented minority in the realm of politics around the world and media as a powerful channel for their portrayal. As the role of women in political leadership is more prevalent in times of crisis around the world, it is exceedingly important to understand the role that the media can play in their portrayal for both foreign and domestic audiences alike. This study reaffirms that more women in leadership within politics is needed for equitable gender representation in politics. May’s speech and her portrayal within the media for both foreign and domestic audiences show that it is possible for women to bridge the gap of gender and politics

Grotesque and Scenography. Virtual reconstruction of anthropomorphic supports within the entry of Philip II in Antwerp (1549)

This paper aims to analyse the presence of a motif from the Flemish repertoire of the grotesque in the configuration of a unique type of anthropomorphic support used in the ephemeral architecture erected on Philip II of Spain’s entry into Antwerp in 1549. The support consists of a figure that, resembling an atlante or a caryatid, supports a cornice, but whose peculiarity is that the body is partially embedded in the surface of the façade, fulfilling a more decorative function than strictly tectonic. The development of this analysis is based on the concept of visual culture, but this approach also constitutes an attempt for developing a virtual reconstruction of this particular motif in its artistic context.Universidad de Málaga. Lifting properties in operator ranges

Given a bounded positive linear operator A on a Hilbert space H we consider the semi-Hilbertian space (H, _A), where _A =. On the other hand, we consider the operator range R(A^1/2) with its canonical Hilbertian structure, denoted by R(A^1/2). In this paper we explore the relationship between different types of operators on (H, _A) with classical subsets of operators on R(A^1/2), like Hermitian, normal, contractions, projections, partial isometries and so on. We extend a theorem by M. G. Krein on symmetrizable operators and a result by M. Mbekhta on reduced minimum modulus.Fil: Arias, Maria Laura. Neuroactive steroids, nociception and neuropathic pain: a flashback to go forward

    Get PDF
The present review discusses the potential role of neurosteroids / neuroactive steroids in the regulation of nociceptive and neuropathic pain, and recapitulates the current knowledge on the main mechanisms involved in the reduction of pain, especially those occurring at the dorsal horn of the spinal cord, a crucial site for nociceptive processing. We will make special focus on progesterone and its derivative allopregnanolone, which have been shown to exert remarkable actions in order to prevent or reverse the maladaptive changes and pain behaviors that arise after nervous system damage in various experimental neuropathic conditions.Fil: Coronel, Maria Florencia.
